Guides rarely provide cause and effect resulting from choices within feature sets which is what everyone such books really want in a guide. The thing I like about it is that it contains suggested lenses that will work well with the D I bought Darrel Young's book " Mastering the D" and would highly recommend it. I also have Thom Hogan's download which I find inconvenient and therefore seldom used. I agree, the Nikon Owners Manual is best. The manual covers a lot of territory and yes it does not tell you the best options in the manual to use for your type of shooting. Any new camera I have bought, I had to spend a while and experiment to find out the best setting for my type of photography. For example, David Busch's guides including his guide to the D are fun to read and are MUCH more helpful than the owner's manual. They don't just tell list menu settings like the manual they give you real world advice about the effects of the menu options on picture taking. As with all guides - it will depend on your initial level of knowledge you have as to what you can learn from this guide. There are quite a few third-party camera guides that have nothing beyond the maker's user manual, but written in grindingly slow, simple text. This does not apply to the Thom Hogan guides. Nerd that I am, I have read the Nikon user manual, the Nikon technical guide and Thom Hogan's guide, all cover-to-cover. There is an enormous amount in Thom's guide not in the Nikon guides, and it's not irrelevant or trivial stuff, or information that would be self-evident to an experienced, intelligent Nikon DSLR user.
Many of the questions repeatedly asked on this forum about the D are not explained well in the Nikon manuals but are covered in Thom's guide. There are plenty of 3rd party books out there. I suggest you go over to your public library and check out what's on the shelves, xx section.
